Our diocesan leadership in partnership with Catholic Leadership Institute has asked parishioners to complete a survey to gather more information about our parish communities. This is an opportunity for all parishioners to reflect on their own spiritual and discipleship growth and identify the ways in which the parish affectionately supports this growth. The access to the link will be available starting on February 17 (press the title Disciple Marker Index to open the survey) and on our Facebook page. Once you access the survey you will be able to select the language of your choice. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de 40 días de oración, ayuno y limosna que comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina al atardecer del Jueves Santo. Es un período de preparación para celebrar la resurrección del Señor en La Pascua. Durante la Cuaresma, buscamos al Señor en oración leyendo la Sagrada Escritura; servimos dando limosna; y practicamos el autocontrol a través del ayuno. Estamos llamados no sólo a abstenernos de los lujos durante la Cuaresma, sino a una verdadera conversión interior del corazón al procurar seguir la voluntad de Cristo más fielmente. Recordamos las aguas del bautismo en las que también fuimos bautizados en la muerte de Cristo, morimos al pecado y al mal, y comenzamos una nueva vida en Cristo. Muchos conocen la tradición de abstenerse de la carne los viernes durante la Cuaresma, pero también estamos llamados a practicar la autodisciplina y ayunar de otras maneras a lo largo de la temporada. Contempla el significado y los orígenes de la tradición del ayuno cuaresmal en esta reflexión. Además, la entrega de limosna es una manera de compartir los dones de Dios, no sólo a través de la distribución de dinero, sino a través del intercambio de nuestro tiempo y talentos. Como nos recuerda San Juan Crisóstomo: "No permitir que los pobres compartan nuestros bienes es robarles y privarlos de la vida. Los bienes que poseemos no son nuestros, sino suyos". (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, No. 2446). En la Cuaresma, los bautizados están llamados a renovar su compromiso bautismal mientras otros se preparan para ser bautizados a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de los Adultos, un período de aprendizaje y discernimiento para las personas que han declarado su deseo de convertirse en católicos.

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446). In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.

In the Catholic Church in the United States, January 22nd is designated as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.” As Catholics, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting, and/or giving alms.
